Di come Alessandro Baricco abbia la capacità di sovrapporsi alle cose che ti fa scoprire raccontandotele, di farti restare impresso il modo in cui te le ha raccontate quasi quanto le cose stesse, ho già detto e scritto. A quale altro «stay hungry» alludessi qui l’hanno capito subito alcune commentatrici più sveglie (nonché più fan.) Quello che però non sanno (non sapete) è che, da quando è morto il morto celebre di cui meno mi sia importato nel 2011, ogni volta (ognuno dei milioni di volte) in cui qualcuno la mena col discorso agli universitari, con la robetta motivazionale la cui efficacia mi pare di parecchie spanne inferiore a quella di T. J. Mackey, ogni volta non mi torna in mente la canzone: mi torna in mente, appunto, Baricco, quell’ultima volta in cui scrisse la rubrica più bella mai comparsa sulla stampa italiana.

Sometimes it was a simple recitation of facts and sobriquets (“best-selling author!” or “Socrates of the Saxophone!”), other times Bruce would take a leaf out of the Stax-Volt treasury and get the audience to spell his name a la Otis: “‘C’ is for cool, which only a foolish man would dispute! ‘L’ is for lean and mean! ‘A’ is ’cause he’s the ace of the saxophone!….”
Bruce and Clarence were Scooter and the Big Man, they were black and white, they were big and small. It was still a bold move in the early ’70s, especially in some parts of the country, to have an African-American in your band, much less one you danced with, rubbed butts with and engaged in a long soulful kiss with; the country was only a few years out of the Civil Rights movement and there are stories of gigs the band didn’t get and hotels they were told they weren’t welcome in.

Questo necrologio è bellissimo. Fatevi un regalo: leggetelo anche se non avete mai ascoltato una loro canzone, visto un loro concerto, appeso un loro poster. E non solo perché, in questo caso, non c’è regalo che basti a compensare quel che vi siete persi.

Il 9 dicembre 1980 un signore del New Jersey fece un concerto a Philadelphia, con una scaletta (da piangere dalla bellezza) che apriva con Born to run e chiudeva con Twist and shout. Anzi, per la verità apriva con quella roba del qualcosa che deve continuare, lo show, la vita, il tour, quel che è.
